How to disable the spam filter in Gmail

"But why would you ever want to do such a thing?" Because all spam filters (so far) are broken, which makes them counter-productive. Is it helpful that I have to pick through a side folder on a regular basis in order to discover what might be missing from my inbox? (Skinner box, anyone?) Yet Gmail doesn't provide a way to abstain from this essential part of the experience. Perhaps Gmail believes its spam filter could not possibly be broken.

However, despite all indications, there is an easy fix: In your Gmail settings, create a filter. One of the search critera fields is called "Has the words". Put there "label:spam" or "is:spam" or "in:spam". When you click on "Next Step", a message box will suggest that what you're trying to do isn't going to work, but you can ignore this. Then you should mark the checkbox called "Never send it to Spam", and then click "Create Filter" to save it. Whatever's already in your Spam folder will remain unaffected, but any new "spam" you receive will remain in the Inbox.

How to disable Gmail Archiving in Mozilla\Thunderbird

Google recommends you configure your IMAP mail account so that "When I delete a message", "Just mark it as deleted". But you don't have to do this! It will cause all your mail to be archived indefinitely instead of really deleting it. You could instead, "Move it to this folder", and choose the "[Gmail]\Trash" folder. Now Gmail will stop building a pile of email you never want to see again.

How to make Mozilla\Thunderbird download Gmail messages right away

Sometimes Mozilla\Thunderbird will indicate that a new message is available, but it won't actually retrieve it, not even the headers, until you go into the folder (inbox) where the message should appear. Hey, the whole point of using this client was to eliminate those tedious 3-second delays! Open your about:config window. Make sure your mail.server.default.autosync_offline_stores (or mail.server.serverX.autosync_offline_stores) is true. Make sure your mail.imap.use_status_for_biff is false.

The reason you would want to disable Gmail spam filtering is because it is a complete failure, at least for me. It filters about 25% of my legit email. And if you use an email client like Outlook, you would never know you missed those important emails. I never get spam emails, so why is Google so confident about their filters when it is so poor. I have Norton Internet Security - and it has never marked a legit email as spam (and that's with just the default settings).
